FOR BEST RESULTS ON SPRAYING

“Spray paint is an easy and affordable way to spruce up something you already have or transform a cheap craigslist find. You can spray paint pretty much anything; but a seemingly simple spray paint project can quickly go south if done poorly. The instructions on the can are valuable. Take the minute to read them. They’ll tell you how far to hold the spray can from the object, how long to shake the can before spraying, the proper temperature at application, how long the paint or coating needs to cure, and more.”

PROTECT FURNITURE AND FIXTURES FROM PAINT SPLATTER

Remove small furniture and items from the room. Place larger furniture that cannot be removed in the center of the room, and cover it with plastic. Remove as many fixtures from the room as you can. Remove and store light switch and outlet plates, and cover the switches and outlets with painter’s or masking tape. Cover blinds, light fixtures and ceiling fans with plastic. Tip: Tape the screws to the switch plates so they don’t get lost.

COVER TRIM AND FLOORS

Mask off the trim, doors and windows with paper or plastic taped in place. Leave a crisp line between the trim and wall by running a putty knife along the edge of the tape where it meets the wall. Cover the floor with plastic and tape it down at the edges of the room so that it overlaps the paper on the baseboard molding. Overlap sheets of plastic across the middle of the floor if necessary.

I was inspired with an idea that morning on what to do with my kitchen chairs. The cushion for my deck swing was thrown over the banquette the night before. In the morning when I saw the colorful stripes on the fabric, I knew I would be painting the chairs each a different color.
